Old School Isshinryu color ranking consisted of 4 belts: white, green, brown, and black (not including master and grandmaster ranks). There are some dojos that continue to limit the colors of belts to four. However, most have added the contemporary color ranking system. These additional ranks helps the instructor to recognize levels of knowledge and accomplishments. Additional belts were added between White and Green. These include Yellow and Orange. Between Green and Brown a Blue belt has been added. To add to the confusion, many schools include stripes or tabs to indicate a level of progression within the base color rank. These are often used among classes aimed towards children. It is a great way to teach young children to set small goals and to reach them. The requirements to reach each rank or graduated goal is different per style.
