Clothing Etiquette
Gi or Uniforms
Gi:
-
Unless otherwise directed, students should wear a black Gi. Some events require heavy white Gis so if and when the time comes that this is a need, your Sensei will notify you.
-
On special occasions, Sensei may grant permission to train without the Gi top on. Do not assume you can just go without it.
Patches:
-
A USIKA patch is worn on the Right Shoulder about 2 fingers width from the seam or 2 inches from the shoulder.
-
A Mitzugami patch is worn on the chest – left side.
-
A kanji patch is often worn in this same location in lieu of the Mitzugami.
-
Embroidery of the Kanji is also done in this location.
-
School patch is typically on the opposite shoulder – right shoulder, but Gis may have a screen print or embroidery on the back of a Gi. This is approved only by the Sensei.
-
Belts: There are two ways to tie the belt. Use the style your Sensei has used to tie a belt on you.
Safety
Kumite gear:
-
Each student should own their own set of sparring gear.
-
Pay attention to the Velcro, padding, and general look of the gear and repair potential weak spots. The better care you give towards your equipment, the longer it will last. This is also a reflection of your self-respect and pride in ownership.
-
Mouth guards: Protect your teeth with a size appropriate mouth guard.
-
Jewelry:
-
Piercings: If you have a dermal, septum, and other body piercing which is not in plain view, by participating in any activity without the removal of the piercings, you are waiving any claim of liability. Note: You have been duly informed.
-
If you have plugs, you are encouraged to have solid ones (no holes) in during class. You do not want your earlobe to become a handle or get caught and ripped apart.
-
Rings are not to be worn during class. Exceptions are made for wedding bands primarily during the practice of charts and kata. Necklaces and bracelets are not to be worn as they will likely get torn off.
